Passionate About Inspiring Others

Become a Volunteer Tutor

You can change a life by becoming a volunteer tutor with Project: LEARN!  What could be more rewarding than helping a mother learn to read a bedtime story to her daughter? Or seeing the pride in a student’s eyes as he tells you he just passed the GED?

To become a volunteer tutor, what’s needed is a desire to help someone learn and a willingness to work with a student in a flexible fashion to help them reach their goals. Volunteer tutors must be 21 years of age or older.  It is preferred that volunteer tutors have some college coursework, and compassion for our students’ situations and a commitment to stick with our students through the process as they learn.

Project: LEARN provides free training to all volunteer tutors.  Through a training session with a supervising tutor, new tutors learn about methods and curriculum used to tutor adults in basic reading/ESL and in GED test preparation.  After the tutor training is complete, volunteer tutors are matched with students by our supervising tutors, based on scheduling, location, expertise and rapport.  Supervising tutors provide the initial curriculum and guidance throughout the tutoring process, to ensure the student is getting the assistance needed to achieve his or her goals.  Tutors usually meet with their students once per week for 60 to 90 minutes, at a location and schedule convenient for both.

Become a BookShelf Volunteer

Do you just love to read?  Is your idea of heaven a room full of books, a cozy chair, and time?  Join our terrific volunteer bookstore staff!  BookShelf volunteers usually work one 3 to 3.5 hour shift per week, shelving donated books, helping customers, completing sales and keeping the stores organized.  Our volunteers enjoy helping our customers find books and recommending new authors for them to try.  Because our stores are stocked with donated books, our stores change daily.

Our volunteers love helping customers find unexpected treasures.  Nothing beats the smile on a child’s face when you find a book featuring their favorite Disney character, or a teenager’s fist pump when you find that Stephen King novel he was looking for.  Our prices can’t be beat—we are promoting literacy throughout the county, and our books don’t require batteries!

To volunteer, call or stop in to the BookShelf location where you prefer to volunteer, and leave a message for the Volunteer Coordinator, or contact the main offices of Project: LEARN at or 330.723.1314.

Donate books and other materials to Project:LEARN or the BookShelf

We accept donations of good quality used books at all three BookShelf locations.  We do not accept encyclopedias, condensed books, or newspapers/magazines, but other books of all kinds in good condition are gratefully accepted.  We ask that you donate books during our open hours only; books left outside our stores may be a safety hazard or be damaged by the weather.  Project: LEARN is a 501(c)(3) charity and we will happily provide a tax receipt documenting your book donation.

We are always grateful to receive the following items at any of our locations:  copy paper, trash bags, cleaning supplies, office supplies (staples, paperclips, notebooks, pens, pencils), bottled water, toilet paper, tissues, or paper towels.  These donations will also be acknowledged by a tax receipt.  Thank you for thinking of Project: LEARN when you are cleaning and decluttering!

Buy books at one of our three locations, or through's Smile Program!

You never know what you might find in one of our BookShelf locations…an antiquarian book from the early 1900s at Wadsworth, an exciting romance at Brunswick, an audio book at Medina…the stores are never the same from week to week as we receive donations daily of interesting and unique books.  Any book you haven’t read is new to you!  All profits from our bookstore operations assist in paying for our tutoring operations, books, materials, and staffing costs.  For more information about our bookstores, click here.  You can get great books, for great prices, supporting a great cause at The BookShelf—see below for our locations and open hours!

We have a customer loyalty program: buy 10 books and get 1 free!  Books can be purchased at any of our three stores to participate in this program.  Just ask for a free loyalty card when you shop with us.

Project: LEARN/The Bookshelf: Hours:  Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-4pm

We do carry a limited number of new books at all three stores, focused primarily on books needed by local K-12 students for required reading and summer reading programs.  But if we do not have what you are looking for, you can support Project: LEARN by buying books (and anything else) at  Simply visit that site and select “Literacy Volunteers of Medina County” as the charity you are supporting, and you will be helping Project: LEARN with every purchase you make!
