Our Mission
The mission of Project: LEARN of Medina is to provide accessible and comprehensive literacy education to adults in Medina and surrounding communities. We strive to empower individuals seeking to improve their English proficiency, obtain a GED®, and further their educational prospects by providing high-quality classes, personalized tutoring, and holistic support services.
Our goal is to promote lifelong learning and equip individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to achieve their personal and professional aspirations. We are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity and fosters a sense of community among our learners. Through our efforts, we hope to contribute to the growth and prosperity of the individuals we serve and Medina County.

Joana Swim

Jennifer Brenner
Executive Director
Jennifer has dedicated more than 22 years to Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates, beginning as an In-School Career Specialist and advancing to the position of Business and Community Engagement Coordinator. When the chance arose to lead this incredible non-profit, Jennifer saw it as the perfect moment to embark on a new path.
Jennifer has a BA from Kent State University.
“As the Executive Director, Project: LEARN is not just a program, but a beacon of hope and opportunity for our community. It represents our commitment to lifelong learning and empowerment, providing essential resources and support to individuals from a variety of countries, backgrounds, and socioeconomic statuses. Through Project: LEARN, we strive to cultivate a culture of education, resilience, and growth, enriching lives and fostering a brighter future for generations to come.”
FUN FACT: I tied the knot with my high school sweetheart, whom I began dating in eighth grade.
HOBBIES: Movies, Reading, Cooking, attending Theatre productions, and rescuing beagles.

Joana Swim
Board President
Joana is the Board President. Her journey in Human Resources has been fueled by a deep commitment to cultivating positive workplace cultures and driving business and organizational excellence through strategic people management. Joana received her Bachelors in HR Management from Baldwin-Wallace University & MBA from Ashland University.
“I was inspired to join the Project: LEARN board after seeing the organization’s impactful work in our community. I wanted to be part of a team that is driving positive change and helping individuals reach their full potential through education. Being part of this organization allows me to contribute to these causes actively and witness the positive change we bring about.”
FUN FACT: I’m a collector of vintage Pyrex and have over 150 pieces in my collection. Each one has its own history and character.
HOBBIES: I’m a passionate reader who loves unwinding with a good book. Outdoors, I enjoy hiking and exploring nature’s tranquility. I also delight in hosting gatherings for friends and family, creating warm and memorable experiences.

Angela M. Smith
Board Vice President
Angela has over 10 years of non-profit and workforce development experience, and is dedicated and passionate about helping students and job seekers to achieve their career and academic goals. She has additional experience in child welfare, Social Security disability case management, and cognitive skills training. Angela holds a Master's of Public Administration degree from Kent State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Cincinnati. Angela is a Certified Workforce Development Professional (CWDP) and Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF).
“Literacy and education are vital to an individual’s ability to achieve self-sufficiency. Project: LEARN provides much-needed GED® and ESL tutoring services at no cost to help folks improve literacy and attain a GED®.”
FUN FACT: I have 7 pets!
HOBBIES: I enjoy hiking, especially with my dog. I love to read murder mysteries. A few of my favorite authors are J.D. Robb, James Patterson, Janet Evanovich, and Lisa Gardner.

Barbara Dzur
Board Secretary
Barbara currently serves with the Medina County Community Foundation and brings a strong background in English education, grant writing, and public relations. She is passionate about literacy and community service, and has even served as a GED proctor—making her a natural fit for Project: LEARN.
"As a former English educator and a GED proctor, I know how important adult education is to our community."
Fun Fact: Barbara says, “I know it’s the best bookstore in town!” and is a big fan of The BookShelf.
Hobbies: Supporting local nonprofits, connecting with community resources, and advocating for accessible education.

Tanner Hamsher
Trustee
Tanner is a Human Resources professional at Westfield Bank with a strong background in talent development and organizational leadership. A recent resident of Medina County, Tanner is excited to contribute his expertise to a mission-driven organization that supports lifelong learning.
“As a child, I was fortunate enough to have parents who prioritized my education. I want to help others experience that same opportunity.”
Fun Fact: Tanner is actively involved in Leadership Medina County's Custom Leadership Track and is passionate about community engagement.
Hobbies: Professional development, exploring Northeast Ohio, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Kristen Wise
Trustee
Kristen brings a strong background in risk management and compliance, with a degree in Computer Science from the University of Akron. Kristen joined the Project: LEARN Board in 2024 and is passionate about contributing to a cause that directly impacts adult education in her community.
“I cannot imagine a life where I was unable to read or write. This is a mission that truly matters.”
Fun Fact: Kristen lives in Medina County with her husband, Rich, and their two dogs, Louie and Charlie.
Hobbies: Collecting memories and curiosities—especially vintage postcards, travel mementos, and unusual antiques.
Julie Alexander
Trustee
Julie Alexander brings a strong background in education and business to her role as a Project: LEARN board member. With over a decade of experience as an independent education consultant, she has worked with schools, organizations, and learners to develop effective strategies that support academic growth and lifelong learning.
Julie earned her Bachelor of Arts in English with a specialization in Business Administration from the University of California, Los Angeles, and later completed her Master of Arts in Teaching at Northeastern University. Her expertise blends communication, curriculum development, and strategic planning, making her a valuable advocate for literacy and education initiatives.

Scott Quade
Trustee
Scott Quade is a lifelong educator who dedicated 34 years to teaching English at Medina City Schools, where he also founded and coached the MHS Debate Team for 30 years. Since retiring in 2023, he has continued to serve as a substitute teacher in Medina and has also taught English Composition at the University of Akron.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Bachelor of Science in Education, and a Master’s degree in English. Scott joined the Project: LEARN Board in spring 2025, motivated by his passion for education and a desire to continue his lifelong mission of supporting learners of all ages.
For Scott, Project: LEARN represents a vital bridge in education, meeting needs that extend beyond what traditional public schools can provide. Outside of his professional contributions, he maintains a small farm animal rescue, supports debate teams in Summit and Medina Counties, and enjoys competing in fencing, archery, and equestrian sports, three disciplines in which he has competed internationally.

Suzie Muniak
Trustee
Suzie Muniak is the Deputy Director of the Medina County District Library, where she has served since 2005. Deeply committed to community connection and access to information, she is also active in several local initiatives, including the Family First Council, Adult Advisory Consortium, Living Well Medina County, and Dementia Friendly Medina County. Suzie is passionate about literacy, education, and ensuring that individuals have the tools they need to learn and grow.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, both from Kent State University. Suzie joined the Project: LEARN Board in June 2025, building on her prior service as a volunteer at the Brunswick BookShelf from 2023 until its closure in 2025. She now serves on the Growth and Development Committee and looks forward to continuing to support Project: LEARN’s BookShelf locations whenever possible.
For Suzie, serving on the board is a way to champion lifelong learning and community empowerment, particularly through ESOL, literacy, and GED programming. She believes Project: LEARN is a vital organization that strengthens Medina County by connecting people with knowledge, resources, and opportunity.
Outside of her professional and volunteer commitments, Suzie enjoys biking, hiking, traveling, and reading. A self-proclaimed National Park super fan, she has visited 13 parks so far and hopes to keep growing that list.

Jenny Young
Trustee
Jenny Young is the owner of SHE Did It Videography and an award-winning storyteller with a background in marketing, branding, and media production. She began her career supporting the Akron Area YMCA through Caler & Company before serving as a videographer for Mimi Vanderhaven from 2010 to 2018. Since launching her own business, Jenny has earned recognition at the local, regional, and national levels, including multiple Clapper Awards, a Hometown Media Award, a People’s Telly Award, and the ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award.
She holds a degree in Mass Media Communications with a minor in Creative Writing from the University of Akron and completed leadership training through Leadership Medina County. Jenny joined the Project: LEARN Board in June 2025, driven by her passion for books and her belief that reading is a gateway to endless opportunities.
Outside of her professional work, Jenny enjoys reading, managing a Little Free Library at her home, and watching classic films on Turner Classic Movies.
